After a thrilling start of the tournament with Germanys victory over Costa Rica by 4 goals to 2 the stage was set for a classic encounter between a European and South American teams.

Poland qualified as a second best runner-up in the European group consisting of England while Ecuador qualified as a third team from South America after Brazil and Argentina. Though it may look impressive but critics believe that it is all due to home matches played at high altitude in capital Quito.
